Stats, updates, and looking for feedback

Posted by TeamTrivial - December 1st, 2024

Before we release the next Trivial Guesser game in ~8 hours, and the next Trivial Trivia game in 7 days, I would like to post about stats, updates, and gather some feedback about plans for later this month. Let's dive in!

Feedback Request

Currently we're evaluating whether we want to publish Trivial Gauntlet at the end of December. This game is envisioned to be an expansion of endless trivia already available in some packs so it honestly may not make for a great submission. We have a Christmas Day surprise in the works that I think would work out much better than a proper new entry... Feedback is welcome on this. Should we publish a game utilizing the same trivia packs for a game focusing on different endless trivia categories, or work on enhancing our packs and submissions?

November Grab Bag Stats

First of all, thanks to everyone for playing and getting the submission to 3.9 starts & a frontpage! This is the third Trivial Trivia entry to make it to the front page and we're very proud and thankful for the honor. The November Grab Bag was not exactly a submission we thought would do well, so to see it be a fan favorite is very welcoming!

Now for the stats:

Our best day was the first full day the game was live - November 25. The game received many plays from guests and NG users alike! Our second-best day was the day after with people trickling in from the front page. As you can imagine, November 28 was a slow day due to the U.S.A. celebrating thanksgiving but views and plays picked right back up on Nov 29. As with our previous entries that were frontpaged we've noticed a large percentage of guest players that unfortunately won't be earning medals or scores!

The game currently sits at over 2k plays, 20 favorites, and plenty of medals earned and scores submitted!

Over the last few months we've lightened up on our hard handed approach towards encouraging players to sign in to NG and even be an NG supporter. We found forcing NG interaction was not beneficial to the players and often would result in less engagement. While I'd love to find a way to encourage users to log in or create an NG account to fully take advantage of every feature we (and the site) has, we're at a loss at how to do this without making the game more cumbersome or annoying to play. If you have suggestions on this feel free to let us know!

Trivial Guesser Reboot - Flags

First of all - shoutout to @DrSaturn2 for playing this game so much they've amassed 250 challenges completed! I appreciate we made a game you like so much you come back to it for the daily challenges.

Trivial Guesser has a new entry as of November 1 (and soon to have another later today)! In case you missed it, check it out below.

As for stats, the rewrite of the codebase removed a lot of our in-depth stats tracking, so all we're looking at now is total plays.

Total plays peaked on the day of release (Nov 1, ignore the mixed up dates in this graph) and dwindled down over the month.

We had received feedback regarding our approach to daily content and will be choosing to dial it back a little in favor of static challenges available on release. In our upcoming game expect 25 days of content (down from our planned 30+) along with many more static challenges.

Trivial Guesser is not performing as I had personally hoped although it's so it is passion project at this point. As long as the games navigate their way through judgement you can expect more to come!

Update - Beyond December

Currently we're looking to potentially take the month of January off so we can focus on tackling what I'll call technical debt accrued over the last 6 months. Trivial Trivia and it's codebase is a very well oiled machine, but it's time that it gets a facelift and optimizing that I've been unable to get working over the last month. To give you some perspective, these 'issues' have been on the backburner for some time and keep getting overlooked:

  • Endless trivia questions do not unlock questions in question lists
  • Participation NG Medal does not award to players with a slow internet connection
  • Styling and fonts are inconsistent across screen views
  • Fonts need to be loaded from local files VS Google Fonts (in some circumstances, fonts do not load properly and make text nearly illegible).
  • On mobile, padding is suboptimal for leaderboard text, select text, etc.
  • Properly implement controller support (beyond keyboard hotkeys) for buttons and selections

Beyond these issues, we are also looking to overhaul the menu UI and grid displays to provide a look that is a little more unique and less what you'd expect from an HTML game.

I'm hoping to tackle some of these issues and more by having a break month for January. This would mean no new Trivia or Guesser game until February. This idea is still in the works so we'll plan to announce this mid-December if the plan is still accurate.

Closing Thoughts

the team here appreciates everyone's support, feedback, and help with keeping these trivia games around! We hope you continue enjoying what we put out and will keep playing the series in 2025!
