Know how a lot of HTML5 submissions do not have an indication for when a score is submitted or a medal is unlocked? The next Trivial Trivia game will not have that issue!

As of tonight a barebones notification system has been implemented into the game for Newgrounds activities.

Currently, you'll get a pop-up when you load the game and are signed in (or after a successful sign-in), submit scores to the leaderboards, and unlock a medal. Few bugs will be ironed out before the release of the game this Saturday.

Just some random thoughts on the upcoming game applessmillion and I have been hammering away at over the last month and a half.

What initially was planned as a 200-question game across 3 trivia 'categories' has quickly spiraled into something much larger. The fun part about Newgrounds is there's so much to talk about. With over 20 years of history, the website has seen many eras of users, submissions, and content that is honestly really neat.

The game was originally supposed to feature a 100-question history, functionality, and users' category alongside a 50-question NG events/collabs/game jams category. Short and simple 150-question game with a very generic and generalized NG theme.

But then, Pico day hit so there were discussions to implement some trivia about Pico and his games. One thing led to another and introduced new trivia for the Pico series, Madness Combat, TANKMEN, Pebbles Quest, and most recently Friday Night Funkin'. FNF was added this weekend as it was becoming increasingly difficult to have trivia surrounding so many eras and collections without some big mention of FNF and how it shaped the site in the last few years, so we worked to make a pack of 40 questions which wrapped today.

There's one last trivia pack in the works that will cover a range of characters as well, but you'll have to play the game on Saturday to find out what that is.

Not only have we created a total of 8 trivia packs ready to play, but 5 artists here on the site have agreed to feature their art in the game for these trivia packs too. What was originally planned to be something simple and relatively quick turned into a huge project with some really awesome collaboration with great people here.

In other news, the game features many leaderboards and medals to earn! Here's a quick picture of the medals:

The last trivia pack does not have medals added yet - they will be soon!

Short update but it's something!

Another new feature for the Trivial Trivia series is the fact that you can play it on any screen size, and any Newgrounds-capable device! Mobile brings a unique feature as well - fullscreen mode! Launching into fullscreen on your mobile device will even hide the status bar (at least on Android) so you get the full gaming experience!

Creating the pages to respond to different screen sizes, including changes on the fly certainly isn't a cakewalk, but its current implementation is great. You can easily play trivia packs wherever you are!

old image but it gets the point across

If everything goes well, the game will have 7 (up from the original 5 planned) trivia packs with a over 300 questions combined! You can test your NG knowledge on June 1 when the game drops!

It's taken the weekend to iron out, but the next Trivial Trivia game will have a 'catchup' mechanic! Each trivia session is composed of 20 questions taken from however many total questions are in a trivia pack. Up until today, these questions were picked randomly. But now... you will be able to view new questions & incorrectly answered questions even easier!

iu_1210825_21256250.webp

How it works

iu_1210824_21256250.png

Each new trivia session, 20 questions are picked.

  • The game first checks for any viewed, but incorrectly guessed questions. It'll add up to 8 random questions meeting this criteria to the round.
  • Next, the game checks for questions never viewed before. It'll add up to 10 new questions for you!
  • Finally, the game fills in the rest of the questions with entries you've seen before and answered correctly. You are guaranteed to have a minimum of 2 per round show up, with a maximum of 20 (in case you've seen & answered a full trivia pack).

This ensures you'll be given the chance to view everything & answer everything correctly!

Why is this useful?

The main trivia pack in this game - 'All About Newgrounds' will have 100 questions in total! This means you'll need to play a minimum of 5 times to see every question. There's also a secret medal you can unlock that requires answering a set amount of questions correctly across sessions.

The next Trivial Trivia game will be published Saturday, June 1!

As @applessmillion has mentioned, Trivial Trivia: the Newgrounds Collection (TT:NGC) is dropping June 1!

So what can you expect to see?

This game will come in 'packs', which are sets of questions focused around one topic or category. This game will feature 5 (maybe 6?) packs, which include the following:

  • All About Newgrounds.com
  • All About Pico (and Friends)
  • All About Madness
  • All About Tankmen
  • All About Events & Jams (name being workshopped)

These packs will have over 30 questions (one has 85!) focused on each of those topics. Each of these packs will have stat tracking separate of each other, so you can easily find what questions you've encountered, your best score, total plays, and more for each pack!

I'll be posting sporadic updates leading up to the game's release, so look out for more details soon! Will probably post what to expect with Newgrounds medals and leaderboard integration...

A new game brings new features! The HTML re-work of the Trivial Trivia series will soon have a question list that unlocks questions as you view and answer them. The page for this looks something like the picture below.

More feature information will be shared before the game publishes in the next few weeks!
